Imagine this: you are walking out in the forest, looking at fallen branches and twigs along your path. Suddenly, you come across one covered in miniature rainbows!

You look closer, and you think what you see growing on that decaying wood is...tiny turkey feathers? What you are seeing is the amazing Turkey Tail mushroom!

Turkey Tail (Trimetes versicolor) is a polypore mushroom that specializes in breaking down fallen or decaying hardwood trees. It is charactized by its curvaceous shape and multicolored bands across its surface. These bands can be some of the most breathtaking parts of any walk in the woods!  It is an incredibly important part of the forest ecosystem as it quickly decomposes trees and brush back into vital soil nutrients. Not only is Turkey Tail beneficial to our treasured woods, but also to our bodies!

Turkey Tail is one of the most researched medicinal mushrooms with a long history of traditional use in both Chinese and Native American natural medicine, revered in each for its immune system supporting properties.  Thanks to its unique blend of polysaccharides and glucans, Turkey Tail has been shown to maintain healthy inflammation levels, as well as support the gut, liver, and kidneys.

There is also research that shows how polysaccharides and prebiotic compounds in Turkey Tail may beneficially support the microbiome found in our digestive system. For those unaware, our gut is filled with diverse healthy bacteria that aid us in digestion of food and metabolizing nutrients, as well as regulating our nervous system, which has strong ties to the gut; this bacteria is known as your microbiome.  A thriving and balanced gut biome is one key aspect of achieving and maintaining radiant health across our whole bodies!

Next time you find yourself out in the woods, stop for a moment. Take a breath. Look around. You may spot the fan-like multicolored bands of Turkey Tail. And now, you can thank it for all it can do to help us stay healthy!
